Boots Introduces In-Store Weight Loss Jab Service in 17 UK Branches

A major UK beauty and pharmacy chain is now offering weight loss injections at select locations across Britain as part of a new trial initiative. Boots has launched a 'drop-in' service that allows customers to purchase weight loss jabs at 17 of its stores nationwide, marking a significant expansion in accessibility for these treatments.

New High Street Access to Weight Loss Medications

This trial service represents the first time consumers can access medications such as Mounjaro and Wegovy directly on the high street. Previously, Britons could only obtain these weight loss drugs through online prescriptions or doctor's surgeries in England, where Mounjaro is available on the NHS under specific conditions.

The in-store service enables shoppers to book an appointment online or walk in for a consultation with a pharmacist in a private room. During this session, the pharmacist will assess the individual's health and medical history to determine their eligibility for the treatment.

Addressing Obesity with Convenient Healthcare Options

Jamie Kerruish, chief healthcare officer at Boots, emphasized the chain's commitment to providing flexible healthcare solutions. "We know that people have different preferences for how they access healthcare services – some seeking online support and some wanting in-person conversations with their local practitioner," he stated.

Kerruish added, "Our weight loss treatment services are for anyone whose lives are affected by obesity. For people who are overweight or living with obesity, it can be hard to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. Weight loss treatment combined with 360 support to make lifestyle and behavioural changes can be a powerful tool in helping people manage their weight."

Background and Current Prescription Landscape

Currently, an estimated 1.5 million people in Britain are taking weight loss drugs, prescribed either through specialist services or private prescriptions. However, access has often been restricted, with NHS prescriptions typically limited to obese individuals who also have other health issues.

Boots has already been selling Mounjaro, manufactured by Eli Lilly, and Novo Nordisk's Wegovy via its Boots Online Doctor service. This new trial extends their offering to physical stores, enhancing convenience for customers.
