Walsall GP Relocation Plans Could Affect 5,000 Patients in Palfrey

Over 5,000 GP patients in Palfrey, Walsall, could be relocated to the Saddlers Centre under new health proposals. The NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB) has identified the Palfrey Health Centre building as not up to standard, prompting a review of alternative sites.

Building Standards and Relocation Evaluation

Pip Mayo, a director at the ICB, stated that the group's estates team found issues with the physical standards of the building at 151 Wednesbury Road during a recent assessment. This location currently houses both the Palfrey Medical Centre and Ambar Medical Centre, with the latter set to remain at the site if plans proceed.

The ICB is now evaluating the relocation of Palfrey Medical Centre to a unit in the Saddlers Centre, which is less than one mile away. Ms Mayo emphasized that no decision has been made, and a formal consultation with patients and local councillors will follow to gather feedback.

Community Feedback and Concerns

Initial feedback from the community has been split down the middle, with elderly service users expressing more opposition to the move compared to those less dependent on the facility. Councillor Hajran Bashir, representing Palfrey ward, reported receiving numerous emails and phone calls from concerned residents.

From the feedback I've had from the residents, we need a footprint in Palfrey, Councillor Bashir said, highlighting local anxiety about the potential closure and move to the town centre. When asked if the building could be upgraded, Ms Mayo responded that it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Additional Councillor Perspectives

Other local councillors have voiced similar worries. Councillor Aftab Nawaz noted, I think we shouldn't underestimate how anxious older people can get when they go into the town centre. Councillor Tina Jukes added, If you moved it my fear is that it would be too far for people to go.

Portfolio holder for culture, health and wellbeing, Councillor Gary Flint, stressed the importance of proper engagement, stating, We need to get the engagement right and no decision has been made. We're at the start of a journey, hopefully an exciting journey.

Next Steps and Uncertainty

The director did not confirm whether any other alternative sites were considered for the transition. The proposals remain under review, with the ICB focusing on ensuring that any changes meet the needs of the community while addressing the substandard conditions of the current facility.

As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to participate in the upcoming consultation to voice their opinions and help shape the future of healthcare services in Palfrey.
