YO! Sushi in Birmingham Selfridges Fails Hygiene Inspection
YO! Sushi Birmingham Fails Hygiene Inspection

YO! Sushi, located inside Birmingham's Selfridges department store, has been ordered to improve its food hygiene standards after receiving a low score from inspectors. On June 24, the popular conveyor-belt sushi chain was awarded a '2' rating (improvement necessary) by local authority hygiene inspectors, as recorded on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website.

According to the FSA's scoring system, any rating above '3' (generally satisfactory) is considered a fail. A '2' indicates that improvement is necessary, meaning the establishment falls short of the required standards in some areas.

Only Two Failing Branches Nationwide

As of August 4, this Birmingham Selfridges outlet is one of only two YO! Sushi branches in the country that are failing hygiene inspections. The other is located at Heathrow Airport. This places the Birmingham store in a small minority, as the chain is known for its extensive menu of over 70 types of sushi and its distinctive conveyor-belt service.

During the inspection, local authority officers assess several key factors, including cleanliness, food preparation methods, and overall hygiene practices. In this case, the management of food safety and hygienic food handling passed the test. However, one specific area received criticism.

Building Cleanliness Flagged

The cleanliness and condition of the building was listed as 'improvement necessary' on the FSA website. This category covers a range of issues, including the appropriateness of the layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities, and pest control measures. Inspectors deemed these aspects to be below the required standard.

The news comes as a blow to the popular chain, which has a strong presence in Birmingham. It also highlights the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards in food establishments, especially those in high-profile locations like Selfridges.

YO! Sushi has been approached for comment but has not yet responded. Customers who have dined at the branch may wish to check the FSA website for the latest updates on its hygiene rating.
