Tributes Paid to NHS 'Hero' Vera Holley, 95, Who Devoted Life to Good Hope Hospital
NHS 'Hero' Vera Holley Dies at 95 After Decades of Service

Tributes have been paid to a 'tireless hero' of a Sutton Coldfield hospital who has passed away at the age of 95. Vera Holley, affectionately known as 'Holly' and described as someone who dedicated her life to helping others, began her career at Good Hope Hospital in 1969.

She started out as an auxiliary nurse, working in the Richard Salt Unit's recovery ward. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust said her compassion and commitment quickly made her a beloved figure among colleagues and patients alike.

A Lifelong Connection to Good Hope

Even after her retirement in 1995, Holly's connection to Good Hope Hospital continued. With the support of her husband, Ray, she volunteered and fundraised tirelessly. Over the years, Holly raised thousands of pounds for the hospital by organising raffles, auctions and 'bric-a-brac' stalls.

Her dedication was formally recognised in 2008 when a ward was named in her honour – the Vera Holley Clinical Decisions Unit. On her 80th birthday, Holly received a personal letter from the then Chair of the hospital trust, Clive Wilkinson, congratulating her and expressing gratitude for her decades of service to the NHS.

Colleagues Remember Her Legacy

The trust said tributes from colleagues at the hospital reflect the respect and admiration she inspired. Emma Hartill, Associate Director of Nursing, said: 'Holly was such an amazing person and was definitely a Good Hope hero. She tirelessly supported the hospital and is always thought of and talked about, we will never forget her.'

Kaye Caulfield from the Imaging Department said: 'I remember Holly for her tirelessly hard work. She was a credit to the hospital and will be sadly missed by all.' Samantha McDonnell from the Cardiology team added: 'Holly was a breath of fresh air in the Emergency Department when I worked there.'

A spokesperson for the trust said: 'Holly will be remembered with deep gratitude and affection by all those who knew her.'
