Prince Harry in Birmingham After Legal Battle Loss

The Duke of Sussex made his first public appearance since losing a high-profile legal battle, visiting Birmingham Children's Hospital on July 9, 2026. Prince Harry, Patron of WellChild, attended to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first WellChild Nurse, a role created in 2006 and part-funded by the Duke to support children with complex medical needs and their families.

Celebrating Two Decades of Specialist Care

During the visit, Prince Harry met 12-year-old patient Alec Hill, who has a rare chromosomal condition and a rare immune system disease, and uses a wheelchair due to brain damage. He spoke with Alec's parents, Kelly and Stuart Hill. He also met Wyatt Makwana, 12, who was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, along with his parents Sam and Brian Makwana.

The Duke cut a cake commemorating the 20-year milestone and made a speech to families, praising their resilience. He also engaged with healthcare professionals, including WellChild nurse Nicky Holt, who became the 53rd WellChild nurse when her appointment was announced in October 2024.

First Public Engagement After Legal Setback

This engagement marked Prince Harry's first public outing after losing a court case against the Daily Mail over claims of unlawful information gathering. The visit highlighted his continued commitment to supporting young people and healthcare charities.

According to a PA report, the Duke spent time listening to personal stories from patients and their relatives, praising their courage and determination in overcoming significant obstacles. The event also celebrated the work of charity partners and hospital staff who provide essential care, guidance, and emotional support.

Long-Standing Commitment to WellChild

Prince Harry has been Patron of WellChild since 2007, and the WellChild Nurse programme has expanded to 53 nurses across the UK. The role is designed to support children with complex medical needs and their families, helping them navigate healthcare systems and receive coordinated care.

The visit also comes as part of the Duke's return to the UK to mark one year until the Invictus Games 2027. Birmingham Children's Hospital CEO Matthew Boazman welcomed the Duke, along with Director of Programmes Amy Mitchell.
