The gastroenterology department at Stepping Hill Hospital has marked a significant milestone by securing a prestigious new accreditation that underscores their commitment to delivering the highest standards of medical liver care. This achievement positions the team as pioneers within the Greater Manchester healthcare landscape.
A Landmark Achievement for Greater Manchester
Operated by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, the gastroenterology team has become the first in the entire Greater Manchester region to attain level 1 accreditation through the Improving Quality in Liver Services (IQILS) programme. This national initiative is dedicated to enhancing the quality of medical liver services across the United Kingdom.
Comprehensive Liver Care Services
The team provides extensive multi-disciplinary support and treatment for patients suffering from a diverse range of liver conditions. Their expertise covers cirrhosis, hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and liver cancer, ensuring comprehensive care tailored to individual patient needs.
Annually, the department performs over 1,200 fibroscans, which are crucial for assessing liver scarring and fatty changes, alongside more than 360 ascitic drains to alleviate symptoms like pain by removing abnormal abdominal fluid. This procedural volume highlights their active and essential role in patient management.
Recognition of Excellence and Quality
The IQILS programme is administered by the Royal College of Physicians, with support from the British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL) and the British Society of Gastroenterologists (BSG). It collaborates with liver communities, professional bodies, and patient groups to establish and maintain high standards.
Accreditation involves rigorous assessment by national Consultant Hepatologists and Hepatology Specialist Nurses, providing independent validation that the service excels in continuous improvement, consistency, and the sharing of best practices.
Leadership and Patient Confidence
Dilraj Sandher, Chief Medical Officer for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, expressed immense pride in the team's accomplishment. He stated, "We're very proud our gastroenterology team are the first in Greater Manchester to gain this IQILS accreditation, which shows their dedication and commitment to the best possible standards for our liver patients."
He further emphasised, "We hope this will mean patients can feel confident in their liver service and be assured of receiving high quality consistent care." This accreditation not only recognises the team's hard work but also aims to bolster patient trust and assurance in the services provided.
Stepping Hill Hospital, situated in Stockport, Greater Manchester, continues to enhance its healthcare offerings, with this accreditation serving as a testament to its ongoing efforts in medical excellence and patient-centred care.
