Sutton Cottage Hospital Reopens June 1 After £8.5M Refurb

Sutton Cottage Hospital in Sutton Coldfield is set to fully reopen on June 1 following an 18-month, £8.5 million refurbishment. The hospital, run by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHC), will now serve as a dedicated healthcare hub for people aged over 65, offering a range of integrated services.

One-Stop Healthcare for Over-65s

The newly refurbished hospital will provide a 'one stop' healthcare hub for older adults in north Birmingham. Services will include respiratory, diabetes, dietetics, frailty, musculoskeletal, bladder and bowel care. Community diagnostics such as X-rays will also be available, aiming to reduce pressure on acute hospitals.

GP Practice Relocation

The Vesey GP Practice will move from James Preston Health Centre to Sutton Cottage Hospital, offering seven ground-floor consulting rooms and extended hours, including evenings and weekends. This move is expected to improve access to primary care and reduce the need for hospital visits.

Modernisation Preserving Heritage

The refurbishment has balanced modernisation with preservation, retaining traditional cornicing and picture framing. The building, which began as a nursing home in 1897 and became an eight-bed cottage hospital in 1907, has been transformed into a contemporary, accessible environment.

Community and Staff Benefits

BCHC's chief transformation officer Chris Holt highlighted the hospital's role in delivering neighbourhood health services with a focus on frailty and supporting older adults to live independently. GP partner Dr Roger Gent expressed excitement about offering a wider range of services and integrated care.

Local MP Andrew Mitchell praised the investment, calling it a 'ground-breaking health facility' for older residents. Phil Steele of Manton, the lead contractor, noted the rewarding challenge of renovating the historic building.
