Chester's Lord Mayor Opens Town Hall for Brew Monday to Beat January Blues
Chester Town Hall hosts Brew Monday for mental wellbeing

Chester's civic heart will open its doors for a special afternoon of warmth and connection this January, as part of a national campaign to combat post-holiday low moods.

Beat the January Blues with a Cuppa and a Chat

The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Sherin Akhtar, will personally welcome residents into the historic Town Hall on Monday, 19th January 2026. The event, running from 1pm until 4pm, is a local take on the Samaritans' annual Brew Monday initiative. Instead of facing Blue Monday alone, people are encouraged to reach out, share a complimentary cup of tea, and enjoy a warm conversation.

Organisers have a simple goal: to get people talking and building connections during the winter months. The event is free and open to all, with donations to the Samaritans warmly welcomed. Throughout the afternoon, staff and volunteers will be on hand to ensure everyone feels at home.

Explore History and Community Support

Visitors will get a rare chance to wander through one of Chester's most striking Victorian Gothic civic buildings. The experience includes exploring the council chamber, viewing civic memorabilia, and hearing about notable moments in the city's rich history. A dedicated history talk is scheduled for 2pm, for which booking is advised.

Local wellbeing groups and the Chester and District Samaritans branch will be present to share information about their services. The Samaritans have provided emotional support in the area for more than five decades.

Councillor Sherin Akhtar said the event underscores how a simple chat over tea can make a significant difference. She expressed delight at welcoming residents into a building filled with history, stories, and civic pride, to enjoy a cuppa and celebrate Chester's community spirit.

A Civic Space for Community Connection

This event continues the Town Hall's role as a venue for community gatherings, recently hosting charity performances and other events. It forms part of the Lord Mayor's Civic Theme, "Pride in Place," which aims to bring people together in shared civic spaces.

The Lord Mayor added that Chester's strength has always been its compassionate and resilient people, and Brew Monday is a perfect chance to come together, look after one another, and share the stories that shape the city's identity.
