MP Advocates for Social Media Ban to Combat Youth Mental Health Crisis
There has been a deeply concerning and significant decline in the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people across the nation in recent years. This troubling trend has sparked urgent calls for action from policymakers and community leaders alike.
Previous Government's School Mental Health Initiatives
I am extremely proud of the previous Government's substantial record on supporting children's social, emotional, and mental health needs within educational settings. This comprehensive approach included the crucial introduction of mental health support teams in schools and colleges throughout England. More than 600 of these essential teams are now operational and providing vital assistance to students.
The previous Government also equipped schools and colleges with detailed guidance and practical resources to help them develop a holistic whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing. These initiatives created important foundations for addressing psychological needs within educational environments.
Proposed Social Media Ban for Children
I would strongly support implementing a complete ban on social media access for children, which I firmly believe would help create the necessary conditions in schools for our children to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Social media platforms have demonstrated significant negative impacts on young minds, contributing to anxiety, depression, and social comparison issues.
It is profoundly disappointing that the current Government has refused to even consider such a necessary ban, despite mounting evidence of social media's harmful effects on developing brains and emotional wellbeing.
Local Organization Making a Difference
One of the outstanding local organizations actively helping young people who are struggling with their mental health—in school, at home, and in various social settings—is the Brentwood Catholic Children's Society. This remarkable charity has been providing essential support to families throughout Essex and East London.
During this month's Children's Mental Health Awareness Week, the BCCS contacted me to highlight some of their impactful work with local families. Their efforts include:
- Hundreds of counseling sessions held in schools and at the BCCS Centre in Billericay
- Christmas vouchers distributed to families experiencing financial hardship
- Emergency crisis support provided directly within school environments
The young people receiving assistance have struggled with diverse challenges including bereavement, anxiety, trauma, and family conflict. Many face severe difficulties such as self-harming behaviors or complete refusal to attend school.
Vital Support for Vulnerable Youth
Clearly, the work carried out by BCCS and similar organizations to ensure children's voices and emotions are heard and acknowledged remains absolutely vital. I extend my sincere gratitude to all those who work so tirelessly to support young people through their most difficult times.
The Brentwood Gazette serves communities including Billericay, Brentwood, Hutton, Shenfield, and Wickford in Essex, where these mental health challenges affect numerous families daily.
