A major incident has been declared following a large fire in Stourbridge, with West Midlands Fire Service reporting at least 11 major blazes across the region in the past 24 hours. The fire, which occurred on August 15, has been described as the largest and most complex of these incidents, prompting the declaration.
Scale of the Incident
Chief Fire Officer Simon Tuhill confirmed that both West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service declared the fire a major incident. He noted that fire control teams have been handling thousands of 999 calls, while crews have been coordinating attendance at other operational incidents across the West Midlands. The tinder-dry conditions have caused the fire to spread rapidly.
More than 100 firefighters are on scene, with support from Staffordshire and Hereford and Worcester fire services. Ten people were injured in the Stourbridge fire, including a child and several firefighters.

Mr Tuhill expressed sympathy for the local community, saying they have been "so impacted by this incident and devastated by it." He also thanked the community for providing firefighters with "food and drink and best wishes," adding that crews are "deeply grateful" for the support.
He issued a safety message urging the public to be extremely cautious about starting fires during this time, stating that the last thing the service and partner agencies need is additional fires while resources are stretched.

Mr Tuhill praised his crews for working "incredibly hard in some of the most challenging conditions I have ever seen in my 28 years of the fire service." He also thanked police and ambulance colleagues for their efforts, describing the incident as "one of the most significant incidents that West Midlands Fire Service has ever attended." The devastation is extensive, and work continues to bring the situation under control.
