East Midlands Airport apologises after cyber data breach

East Midlands Airport has apologised after customer data was obtained in a cyber security incident. Email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and postcodes were all accessed by an unauthorised third party.

The breach also affected customers at Manchester Airport and London Stansted Airport, all operated by Manchester Airport Group (MAG). Data relating to car parking, lounge access, fast track passes and in-airport WiFi sign-up information was taken.

Statement from Manchester Airport Group

Issuing a statement, Manchester Airport Group apologised after their airports were targeted in the data breach, and assured customers that no banking details had been accessed. The statement said: "Manchester Airports Group has been subject to a cyber security incident by an unauthorised third party."

"A quantity of customer data has been obtained that relates to car park, lounge, and Fast Track bookings and in-airport WIFI sign-ups at Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports. We immediately contained the risk and have been working with specialist advisors and taking appropriate steps to protect our customers and systems."

Authorities informed and operations unaffected

"We have informed and are working with the relevant authorities. At no point has passenger safety or aviation security been compromised. The incident has not resulted in any operational disruption. Airport operations remain unaffected and customer parking services continue to operate normally."

MAG confirmed that neither the group nor the system accessed hold customers' bank or payment details. The data accessed includes customers' email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and postcodes. The group said: "We would like to reassure customers that Manchester Airport Group takes the security of customer information extremely seriously and we apologise for any inconvenience or concern caused."

Customer reassurance and next steps

Upcoming bookings for customers remain valid at the three airports and no further action is required for passengers. The group is continuing to work with specialist advisors and relevant authorities to address the incident.
