NHS Midlands Urges Mask Use in Healthcare as Winter Viruses Spread
NHS Midlands Issues Winter Face Mask Update

NHS Midlands Calls for Mask Use in Healthcare Settings

Health officials in the Midlands have issued updated guidance on face coverings as the UK continues to grapple with the spread of both Covid and seasonal flu. While there is no legal mandate, NHS Midlands is strongly encouraging the public to wear face masks if asked when visiting hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare institutions.

Hand Hygiene and Vaccination Key to Curbing Spread

Kirsty Morgan, the assistant director of infection prevention and control for the NHS in the Midlands, emphasised the simple steps that can make a significant difference. She explained on X, formerly known as Twitter, that combining mask-wearing in clinical environments with thorough hand washing provides a robust defence against the transmission of infections during the colder months.

This advice comes as the UK Health Security Agency releases new data. While Covid infections may have seen a slight decline, the threat from flu is growing. The data shows that virus test positivity for flu increased by 11.6% up to the week beginning November 2.

Free Flu Jab Reminder Issued as Cases Climb

In light of the rising flu cases, the NHS is reiterating its call for all eligible individuals to get their free flu jab as soon as possible. The health service describes the flu vaccine as a crucial protection against a illness that can sometimes become serious or even life-threatening.

Eligible people can book their vaccination quickly and easily through the NHS website, the NHS App, or by calling 119. In a significant update for parents, the NHS also announced that two and three-year-olds can now receive their flu vaccination at local pharmacies, a new convenience aimed at improving child immunisation rates this winter.
