Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Issues Heatwave Warning
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Heatwave Warning

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham has issued a warning as a new heatwave descends on the city, with temperatures expected to reach 33°C over the next 48 hours. The hospital is urging visitors and residents to take precautions to stay safe in the extreme heat.

Hospital Advice for Visitors

In a social media post, the hospital advised: "If you're visiting our hospital over the next few days, please take extra care in this heat. Don't forget to bring bottled water with you and allow plenty of time so you won't need to rush." The warning comes as the Met Office forecasts highs of 33°C on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a peak of 34°C expected.

Risks to Vulnerable Groups

The hospital highlighted that anyone can become unwell in hot weather, but some groups are at higher risk. "Look out for older people, people with long-term health conditions and young children who may find it more difficult to stay cool and hydrated in hot weather," they stated. The hospital shared a list of actions that Birmingham residents can take to help others during the heatwave.

Key Safety Measures

The hospital recommends checking in on older friends, family, and neighbours, particularly those who live alone. It is crucial not to leave babies, children, older or vulnerable people, or pets alone in stationary cars in hot weather. Parents and carers should look out for children in prams or pushchairs, keeping them in the shade, removing excess clothing, ensuring adequate airflow, and checking regularly to prevent overheating.

Babies and young children require additional sun safety measures. Babies under six months should not be exposed to direct sunlight, while older babies should be kept out of the sun whenever possible.

Weather Forecast

The heatwave is expected to continue over the weekend, with temperatures hovering between 20°C and 30°C on Saturday and Sunday. The hospital's warning follows a recent incident involving a zombie knife-obsessed gang member from the B20 area who helped a killer friend and kicked a victim's memorial.
