Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has concluded its 'Rise and Shine' awareness week at Stepping Hill Hospital, aimed at encouraging patients to get dressed, stay active, and keep moving during their hospital stay to support recovery and independence.
Promoting mobility and independence
The initiative, promoted by the trust's patient experience team and ward colleagues, involved staff, patients, families, and community partners. Its core message was that staying dressed and active helps maintain mental and physical wellbeing, reduces risks associated with being bed-bound, and supports independence, particularly for older patients or those at risk of deconditioning.
Patients were advised to sit out of bed, dress independently, walk, and participate in gentle exercises such as chair-based movements and walking around the ward. Families were encouraged to bring suitable clothing and motivate patients throughout their stay.
Community partners and activities
Staff collaborated with Life Leisure and Stockport County Community Trust to provide activity kit bags and ward-based activities. Both partners will also support the training of staff champions to ensure ongoing patient engagement in physical activity.
Patients responded enthusiastically to the activities, expressing enjoyment and a willingness to continue. Plans include continued ward visits, staff training, a 'Rise and Shine' wardrobe, and collaboration with hospital radio station Radio Starlion for music-supported activities.
Stepping Hill Hospital is located in Stockport, Greater Manchester.
