Vapers Face Price Hike as New E-Liquid Tax Takes Effect in October
Vapers across the United Kingdom have been issued a stark warning that the cost of e-liquids is set to rise substantially later this year. The impending introduction of the Vaping Products Duty will apply a flat-rate tax to vaping products, directly impacting an estimated 5.5 million adults who vape nationwide.
Significant Price Increases Expected
Currently, the average price for a standard 10ml bottle of e-liquid in the UK is approximately £3.99. However, from 1 October 2026, this price is projected to exceed £6 once the new duty and VAT are fully applied. The tax is structured per 10ml of e-liquid, meaning it applies to every 10ml within a bottle, rather than as a single flat product price.
Larger refill bottles are likely to experience even more dramatic price surges. Some industry projections indicate that costs could more than double, depending on the specific size and usage patterns of the consumer.
Impact on Consumer Behaviour and Alternatives
For many individuals, vaping has been perceived as a more affordable alternative to traditional smoking. These forthcoming changes threaten to narrow that financial gap, particularly for those who consume larger quantities of e-liquid. A spokesperson for vape experts at Ecigone commented on the potential shift in consumer habits.
“If you’re buying regularly, even small increases can add up quickly over a month,” the spokesperson noted. “Looking ahead, we expect a shift in consumer behaviour, with people changing how they buy and use products to manage costs. That may mean buying in smaller amounts more often or switching to lower-use products to manage spending.”
Broader Context and Recommendations
Concurrently, tobacco products are also slated to become more expensive with a one-off duty increase expected to be introduced alongside the new vape tax. This dual approach adds further cost pressure for smokers and may influence public health outcomes.
With these significant changes scheduled to come into force later this year, vapers are being strongly urged to stay informed and proactively understand how their consumption habits could affect their monthly expenditure. For many, planning ahead now could help mitigate the financial impact when the new regulations are implemented.
The data highlighting that 5.5 million adults vape, representing about 10% of the adult population, comes from the ASH Smokefree GB survey. This underscores the widespread relevance of the upcoming price adjustments across the country.
