The Department for Work and Pensions has announced that new Cost of Living payments will begin reaching eligible UK households within the next five working days. This initiative forms part of the ongoing Household Support Fund, designed to provide crucial financial assistance to those struggling with escalating living expenses.
Distribution Through Local Authorities
The DWP is allocating funds directly to councils and local authorities across the country, who will then administer payments to residents identified as financially vulnerable. This localised approach ensures support reaches those most in need within specific communities.
Payment Structure Variations
Payment amounts vary depending on household composition and location. In Cheshire East, for example, single parents and single individuals will receive £60 payments, while couples qualify for £100. Additional support of £20 per child is available for single mothers and fathers.
More broadly, families across participating regions can expect £100 per couple plus £20 per child. Energy payment support is also being distributed at a rate of £100 for single individuals, couples, and families in the North West region.
Referral Process Requirements
A new referral opportunity opened on 1st July 2025 specifically for financially vulnerable adults and families seeking food and energy support. Council leaders emphasise that only one referral can be accepted per household, and these cannot be backdated to previous support opportunities.
Professional Referral System
All support requests must be submitted through a trusted professional who is already working with or familiar with the household's circumstances. Council guidance states: "You should discuss your need for support with food and energy costs with any trusted professional who is currently working with you or knows your current situation."
These professionals can include individuals working in health services, education, housing support, faith organisations, or third-sector charities. The council adds: "A trusted professional is a person who works in an organisation that supports adults and families."
Assessment and Processing Timeline
Referring professionals must conduct a thorough evaluation of each household's financial vulnerability before submitting applications. Council guidance instructs: "You must evaluate the family/adult situation and decide whether you consider them to be financially vulnerable and in need."
Professionals are expected to provide detailed explanations about why financial support is required and outline the specific impact this assistance will have. The council further states: "For those professionals making referrals to the exceptional cost support you will be expected to provide details of the impact the support will have on your family/adult and the steps that are being taken to reduce the need for additional financial support in the future."
Once submitted, food and energy support referrals will be processed within five working days from receipt, ensuring timely assistance reaches households facing immediate financial pressures.
