Chancellor Rachel Reeves Announces Automatic £150 Energy Bill Support for Six DWP Benefits

Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves has delivered a significant update regarding energy bill support for struggling households across the United Kingdom. During a recent evidence session with the Treasury Committee, Ms Reeves confirmed the implementation of an automatic £150 discount for individuals receiving six specific Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits.

Details of the Energy Bill Discount Scheme

The Chancellor emphasized the government's commitment to shielding consumers and businesses from volatile energy prices, particularly in light of global instability. "We are working on different ways to protect people, including more targeted support," Ms Reeves stated. She highlighted that the expansion of the Warm Home Discount program, announced in last year's spending review, will now benefit an additional three million low-income families.

From April this year, these households will receive an extra £150 off their energy bills, on top of existing support. This brings the total discount for eligible recipients to £300, specifically aimed at those who face the greatest difficulty paying their energy costs, including families and pensioners on the lowest incomes.

Global Context and Energy Price Cap Assurance

Ms Reeves addressed concerns about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its potential impact on UK energy markets. She explained that avoiding direct involvement in the conflict was in the national interest to prevent economic repercussions at home. "One of the reasons why it was not in our national interest to be involved in that conflict is the impact here in the UK," she told the Committee.

The Chancellor reassured the public that the energy price cap remains a protective measure for consumers. Despite geopolitical tensions, a cut in energy bills will proceed as planned in April. On average, domestic energy bills will decrease by £117 starting April 1, with this reduction lasting until the end of June.

The automatic £150 discount will be applied to claimants receiving any of the following six benefits:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit

This targeted support is designed to assist those most vulnerable to energy price fluctuations, building on lessons learned from previous crises, such as the spike in oil and gas prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
