Young Drivers Face Car Insurance Costs Over Address Changes

More than one in three drivers aged 18 to 24 were unaware they needed to inform their insurer about a change of address, according to new research from Aviva. The insurer warns that failing to report such changes could affect cover and lead to difficulties when making a claim.

Aviva research highlights widespread lack of awareness

James Driscoll, motor claims manager at Aviva, said: "Car insurance is based on the information drivers provide, so it's important that insurers are made aware of any changes as soon as they happen." He added: "This includes things like a change of address, which 15 per cent of people surveyed were unaware needed to be declared to their insurer."

Mr Driscoll concluded: "While some changes may seem minor, failing to keep your details up to date could affect your cover and, in some cases, lead to difficulties when making a claim. If in doubt, it's worth contacting your insurer directly to make sure they have the correct information on file."

Other common misconceptions about car insurance updates

The research also found that 61 per cent of drivers do not think they need to tell their insurer about changing their job. Motorists also underestimated the importance of informing insurers about a change in estimated annual mileage (39 per cent), the use of the vehicle (28 per cent), and where the car is kept overnight (26 per cent).

Around one in five drivers do not think they need to tell their insurance company about changing their car. Additionally, 42 per cent believe they do not have to inform their insurer if they have been involved in a minor collision that leads to little or no damage.

Aviva advises on updating details quickly

On its website, Aviva states: "The quickest way to update your address is through our chatbot." The chatbot asks: "I'm here to answer your questions, help you manage your policy online, or put you in touch with the right team. So how can I help you today?" It will add: "I can see you’re trying to change your address. Do you need to change your address on multiple policies?"

The findings underscore the importance of keeping insurers informed of any changes to avoid potential issues with cover or claims. Drivers are encouraged to contact their insurer directly if they are unsure whether a change needs to be declared.
