UK Bank Holidays Rise from Eight to Nine for Thousands

Thousands of UK households are set to enjoy an additional bank holiday, increasing the annual total from eight to nine. The extra public holiday falls on Monday, June 15, and celebrates Scotland's participation in the World Cup.

Scotland Gains a Ninth Bank Holiday

While England observes eight bank holidays per year, Scotland will now have nine. The new holiday was announced to mark Scotland's involvement in the World Cup tournament. However, the decision has sparked debate about the cost and precedent of such holidays.

Political Reactions and Economic Concerns

Speaking on ITV's Good Morning Britain, former Education Secretary Gillian Keegan criticised the move, stating: "It sets a terrible precedent. So anytime anything happens, there is a call for a bank holiday. A bank holiday for this, a bank holiday for that, and normally the answer is no, because there's eight bank holidays and it costs a lot of money to have a bank holiday."

Former Labour cabinet minister Ed Balls, co-presenting the show, added: "It costs billions of pounds for a UK bank holiday. This will cost hundreds of millions of pounds to the Scottish economy." He jokingly asked: "How hungover do they get?"

Scotland's World Cup Fixtures

Scotland's World Cup campaign begins against Haiti at 9pm local time in Boston, which is 2am on Sunday, June 14 for fans back home. They then face Morocco on June 20 and Brazil five days later. Group C matches are split across two host cities, with knockout rounds to follow for qualifying teams.

The squad includes notable players such as Aston Villa's UEFA Europa League-winning midfielder John McGinn, along with Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney, and Scott McTominay. Billy Gilmour withdrew due to an injury sustained in a friendly against Curaçao and has been replaced by Manchester United teenager Tyler Fletcher.

Employment Contract Implications

Legal firm Aberdein Considine clarified: "For Scottish private sector employers, entitlement depends entirely on the wording of the employment contracts. What we would expect to see is the standard clause that employees are entitled to X number of days' holiday plus the usual bank holidays. In this case, employees will not automatically be entitled to the 15 June bank holiday. If the contract does not guarantee all bank holidays, employers may choose whether to grant the additional day."

Benefits of granting the extra holiday could include boosted morale and productivity, as well as a reduction in unauthorised absences.
