Sarah Smith MP has marked the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, joined by the community at the Accrington Pals Memorial. She described the event as a defining chapter in local history, honouring the Lancashire men who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Armed Forces Day and School Visit
Smith also recognised Armed Forces Day, thanking veterans and military families in Hyndburn and Haslingden. In Parliament, she welcomed pupils from Altham St James Primary School after they won an Amazing Accrington competition. The students held a debate on restricting social media for under-16s.
Online Safety and Extremism
Protecting children online has been a key issue, with Smith supporting government plans for stronger protections on social media and gaming platforms. She stated, 'No legislation is ever perfect, but I believe these changes begin to put parents back in the driving seat.' She also raised concerns about far-right extremism, questioning ministers directly.
Great Harwood Fire Response
Smith stayed in contact with United Utilities after a fire in Great Harwood disrupted water supplies, ensuring bottled water was available for affected residents. She thanked volunteers who supported neighbours during the difficult day.
Community Events and New Mayor
Summer events saw strong turnouts at Ossy Carnival and local gatherings. Smith visited Laund Clough to meet conservationists protecting natural spaces. She congratulated councillor Noordad Aziz on becoming Mayor of Hyndburn, calling him a friend who will represent the borough with pride.
National Politics and Transport Links
Smith noted Andy Burnham's decisive mayoral victory, saying 'positive, practical politics can still cut through.' Following Keir Starmer's decision to step down, Burnham is expected to become Labour leader and Prime Minister later this month. Smith has discussed improving transport links for East Lancashire with him. She reaffirmed her priority: ensuring Hyndburn and Haslingden get the investment and voice they deserve.
