Rachel Reeves Confirms She Will Remain Chancellor for Next Budget
Rachel Reeves Confirms She Will Stay as Chancellor

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has made clear she intends to remain in her role for the foreseeable future, asserting that her economic policies have delivered growth and stability. In an interview with Sky News, Reeves confirmed she expects to deliver the next Budget in November, citing her track record over the first two years of the Labour government.

Economic Achievements Highlighted

When asked if she would still be Chancellor in six months, Reeves responded: “Yes, I do, and I’ll tell you why. Because in the almost two years I’ve been Chancellor, I’ve got the economy growing, beating the forecasts.” She pointed to the UK being the fastest-growing economy in the G7 in the first quarter of this year, defying expectations. She also noted that inflation had fallen, with recent figures showing a decline, and highlighted measures to tackle the cost of living, including £150 off energy bills, freezing rail fares and prescription charges, and a new package of support for businesses, motorists, and supermarket shoppers.

Support for the Prime Minister

Reeves was also asked whether she still backed Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader and Prime Minister. She responded: “The Prime Minister is getting on with his job of being prime minister and there is no vacancy.” She added: “Let’s see what happens in the future, but Keir Starmer is the Prime Minister. He has chosen me to be his chancellor and I’m getting on with my job, delivering for the country and delivering for our Prime Minister on his priorities.”

Starmer faces potential leadership challenges from Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham, but Reeves’s comments underscore her loyalty and commitment to the current administration.
