Counter terrorism police have taken over the investigation into the death of former politician Ann Widdecombe after new information came to light, officials confirmed.
Investigation Handover
Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) announced it is now leading the probe following the emergence of "new information and evidence." The move marks a significant shift from earlier statements by Devon and Cornwall Police, who initially said counter-terrorism partners had ruled out a terrorist motive.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated: "The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon."
Discovery of Body
Ms Widdecombe's body was discovered with "serious injuries" by the ambulance service at her home in Haytor, Devon at 11:40am on Thursday, July 9, 2026. Devon and Cornwall Police previously believed the attack occurred around 12:30pm on Wednesday, July 8.
A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham was originally arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday, July 11. He has now been re-arrested "on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism," according to CTPSE.
Police Appeal
Police described the investigation as "dynamic and complex," leading to the new arrest. The force has received over 120 reports of information following a public appeal. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman urged anyone with information to come forward "as a priority."
ACC Longman also appealed to the public not to speculate about the potential motive, calling it "unhelpful" and "distressing" to Ms Widdecombe's relatives. He added that there would be a "heightened" police presence in the local area over the coming weeks.
The suspect remains in police custody, with questioning continuing as of Monday, July 13, according to the BBC.
