Dudley Lib Dems Offer Citizens Fund and Community Skips

Dudley Liberal Democrats Unveil Radical Election Proposals

Dudley's Liberal Democrats have launched what they describe as the most radical transfer of power from the council ever offered, just ahead of the May 7 local elections. The party's manifesto includes a voluntary Citizens Investment Fund, allowing residents to pledge £50 or more for community facilities.

Citizens Investment Fund: A Voluntary Community Boost

The Citizens Investment Fund is designed to empower communities by enabling residents to voluntarily contribute funds for local projects. According to Cllr Ryan Priest, the Dudley Lib Dem leader, this initiative allows people to pay a bit extra towards community projects and see a tangible return on their investment.

"We are saying to people you can voluntarily pay a bit extra to a community project and then see a return on that," said Cllr Priest. The fund could support a range of facilities, such as sports equipment or solar panels at community centres, aiming to foster local engagement and ownership.

Addressing Community Setbacks and Fly-Tipping

This proposal comes in response to previous community setbacks, including a notable rejection by 82% of Cradley residents of a town council proposal. Despite this, Cllr Priest remains optimistic, highlighting that 25% of residents were willing to pay for community projects, indicating a base of support for such initiatives.

In addition to the fund, the Lib Dem manifesto tackles pressing issues like fly-tipping and antisocial behaviour with stricter enforcement measures. "The council talks a good game but we rarely see any action," Cllr Priest commented, criticising current council efforts.

Community Skips and Rapid Response Team

To combat these problems, the party proposes introducing community skips in each ward, providing residents with accessible disposal options to reduce fly-tipping. Furthermore, a Rapid Response ASB Team would be established to tackle vandalism and off-road bikes more effectively.

These measures aim to enhance community safety and cleanliness, addressing long-standing concerns among Dudley residents. The combination of the Citizens Investment Fund and these enforcement strategies forms a comprehensive approach to local governance and community empowerment.

As the May local elections approach, the Dudley Liberal Democrats are positioning these proposals as key elements of their campaign, seeking to offer residents a more active role in shaping their neighbourhoods and improving local services.
