Universal Credit Claimants to Receive £150 Winter Energy Bonus
The Department for Work and Pensions has officially confirmed that millions of households claiming Universal Credit will be handed a one-off £150 bonus later this year as part of the Warm Home Discount scheme for winter 2026/27. This significant expansion of the support program will now cover an extra three million households who receive Universal Credit, ensuring crucial savings on energy bills during the coldest months.
Expanded Eligibility for Winter Support
Previously, only a limited number of Universal Credit claimants were eligible for the Warm Home Discount. However, the government has now extended the scheme to include everyone who claims Universal Credit, alongside other qualifying benefits such as Housing Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance, and Income Support. Low-income pensioners on the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit will also continue to receive this essential energy bills assistance.
Around six million households in total are expected to qualify for the winter 2026/27 support, including some of the poorest pensioner and other low-income families. This move aims to alleviate financial pressures during a time when energy payments are a major concern for those on the lowest incomes.
How the Discount Works
The £150 discount is typically applied directly to energy bills between November and the end of January for most eligible households. Energy suppliers will take the amount off bills either as credit on the customer's energy account or as a top-up voucher, depending on how the bills are paid. This one-time reduction helps deliver vital savings on household costs, providing much-needed relief during the winter season.
Political and Social Impact
Labour has praised the new system, stating that it is now much fairer and supports more low-income families with the cost of living. The expansion of the Warm Home Discount to all Universal Credit claimants represents a significant step in addressing energy affordability issues and ensuring that vulnerable households receive the assistance they need to stay warm during the winter months.
This announcement follows ongoing efforts to tackle the cost of living crisis, with the government highlighting its commitment to supporting those most in need. The inclusion of all Universal Credit claimants in the Warm Home Discount scheme is expected to make a tangible difference in the lives of millions, offering a financial buffer against rising energy costs.
