West Midlands Police have confirmed that the stabbing of a 69-year-old man in Alum Rock is being investigated as a failed carjacking. Abdul Ghafoor, the respected chairman of Mohammedi Masjid, was attacked by masked men after completing the Isha Salat (night prayer) at around 11.55pm on Tuesday, July 7, on St Saviour's Road.
Investigation and Victim's Condition
Police said they are following positive lines of enquiry, having recovered CCTV and spoken to potential witnesses. The force stated: "One line of enquiry we are following is the man was attacked in a failed attempt to steal his car." The victim, a grandfather-of-four, remains in a stable condition in hospital, with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Detectives have increased police presence in the area to reassure the community, noting: "We believe this was an isolated attack and not linked to any of other recent incidents in the area."
Mosque's Response
Mohammedi Masjid released a statement expressing "deep sadness and shock" over the incident involving its "respected chairman." The mosque said: "Uncle Abdul Ghafoor is a valued member of our community, who has dedicated many years of sincere service to the masjid and to those around him."
The statement added: "Our thoughts and heartfelt du'as are with him and his family during this extremely difficult time. We pray Allah grants him a complete and speedy recovery, eases his pain, and blesses him with strength and good health. Ameen."
The mosque appealed for anyone with information, "however small it may seem, to contact police to assist with their enquiries," and urged the public to refrain from unverified speculation on social media.
