Nationwide has confirmed it will keep every one of its 605 branches open until at least 2030, a move that will make it the UK's largest branch network as high street rivals continue to close outlets.
The building society, which has branches in Birmingham, said it continues to invest in both its physical branch estate and digital services as part of offering customers a genuine choice in how they bank.
Branch usage and sales figures
Last year, Nationwide supported 6.7 million unique branch users and was responsible for 57% of all UK branch-based product openings. Its branch current account sales rose by 21% during the same period.
In locations where Nationwide recently became the last bank or building society in town, ATM usage increased by 25% last year, including a 96% rise among non-Nationwide customers. Where Nationwide became the last branch in town in 2025, current account openings rose by 29% year-on-year.
Commitment to high street presence
Mandy Beech, Nationwide’s Director of Retail Services, said: “As banks continue to close their doors and step back from the high street, Nationwide will become the UK’s largest group branch network.”
She added: “This is a major milestone for us and reflects our belief in the value of in-person banking and the reassurance it offers our members and the communities we support. Our data shows branches are very much valued by our customers, with usage rising, and as part of our investment in giving customers real choice in how they bank – whether online, in branch or on the phone - we’re proud to stand by our commitment to keep every one of our branches open until 2030.”
Nationwide is currently the last branch in town in 155 locations across the UK – a number that will continue to grow amid further closures by other banks.
Future branch policy
The building society said: “Our branches are a valued part of the UK’s high streets. That’s why we’re ensuring they will be here today, and here tomorrow. So you can choose how to bank – in branch, in our app, or over the phone. All 605 of them are remaining open until at least the start of 2030.”
Nationwide acknowledged there could be exceptional circumstances, adding: “There may be circumstances beyond our control that mean we have to close a branch. Or relocate it in the same town. We’ll only do so when there’s no other workable option.”
