Aston Villa to Streamline Physical Season Ticket Requests After Fan Backlash
Aston Villa to Streamline Physical Season Ticket Requests

Aston Villa have committed to overhauling the request and approval process for physical season tickets following widespread criticism from supporters. The club's digital-only ticketing system, introduced before the 2023-24 Premier League season, forced most fans to use the official Villa app for entry to Villa Park, leaving many without a tangible match card.

Digital Ticketing Controversy

Prior to the start of last season, Villa implemented the Premier League's digital ticketing system, a change that caused significant distress for some supporters just days before the new campaign began. For the vast majority of fans, entry to Villa Park is now only possible by scanning a digital match ticket stored in the official Villa app.

Around half of the 2,107 supporters who requested a physical season ticket were initially refused. The club explained by email that only those with a medical or accessibility-related need would be granted one. However, Villa have since confirmed that 929 supporters were issued with a physical season ticket immediately, while a further 197 were successful following an appeal.

Club's Commitment to Fans

At a recent Fan Advisory Board meeting, the club stated: "We have always maintained the position that any supporter who needs a physical card will be provided one, and this is not means tested and there is no requirement for medical certificates or other documents to prove need."

The club acknowledged the challenges fans faced, adding: "Taking the feedback from this year and acknowledging there may have been challenges for some people, we will do our best to streamline the request and approval process for next year."

Souvenir Ticket Scheme

In addition to simplifying the physical season ticket process, Aston Villa are planning to introduce a "Souvenir Ticket" scheme. This initiative will allow supporters to purchase commemorative season cards or match tickets if they wish. It is unclear when the scheme will launch, but it will enable fans who are either ineligible for a physical season card or who use digital match tickets to own a tangible keepsake of the season or individual matches.

Impact on Supporters

The digital-only system had left many fans frustrated, particularly older supporters and those less comfortable with smartphone technology. The club's pledge to streamline the process and introduce souvenir tickets has been welcomed by fan groups, who hope it will address the concerns raised over the past year.
