DWP £555 bonus: 17,000 households get extra cash

More than 17,000 households have already received an average of £555 extra per month after using Nationwide building society's Better Off Indicator, a free service that identifies benefits and grants they may be entitled to. The service, which is available to both customers and non-customers, has now been expanded to Virgin Money customers.

How the Better Off Indicator works

The Better Off Indicator helps people identify benefits, grants, and other financial support they may be eligible for, including those already on Universal Credit or other benefits, as well as those who currently claim nothing. It can be accessed online, over the phone, or with support in a branch.

Nationwide has urged more low-income households to check if they qualify for extra support to help with bills and ease cost-of-living pressures. The service is free and aims to remove barriers to accessing financial help.

Nationwide's plea for more people to check eligibility

Kathryn Townsend, head of customer vulnerability at Nationwide, said: "Too many people are missing out on financial support simply because they don't realise they're eligible or find the system difficult to navigate." She added: "At a time when many households are struggling to make ends meet, even a relatively small increase in income can make a real difference."

Townsend also highlighted the expansion to Virgin Money customers, saying: "Expanding the service to Virgin Money customers means even more people will be able to benefit from free, personalised support to understand what help is available."

Impact on households

With millions estimated to be missing out on extra support, the service could make a significant financial difference for many. The average £555 per month boost can help cover essential costs, and the service is now reaching a wider audience through the Virgin Money expansion.
