Michelle Ward recently hosted Dovile Slapikaite, community and partnerships lead for Citizens Advice in Essex, on her morning programme to highlight a service that many may not know exists until they need it. The Help to Claim service, delivered locally by Citizens Advice, supports individuals making a new Universal Credit claim. The assistance is free, independent, and confidential, with advisers guiding people through the often complicated process.
More Than Just Form-Filling
Dovile explained that the service goes far beyond simply filling in forms. Staff help people understand what support they may be entitled to, explain the options available, and provide assistance throughout the application. While anyone making a new claim can use the service, it is particularly important for those facing additional barriers, such as limited digital skills, lack of reliable internet access, physical or mental health conditions, language difficulties, or severe financial hardship.
Accessibility for All
This service is a reminder that, despite much of modern life moving online, not everyone finds these systems straightforward. Accessing financial support should not depend on confidence with computers or knowing where to look for information. Dovile's message was simple: nobody has to navigate the process alone. Help is available, and seeking advice early can prevent problems further down the line.
How to Access Help
The national Help to Claim helpline for England can be reached on 0800 144 8 444, with advisers available Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm. Local information and support can also be found through the Citizens Advice Essex network. The full interview is available to hear again at phoenixfm.com.
