Royal Mail Delays Impact 73 Postcodes Ahead of Mother's Day

Royal Mail is experiencing substantial delivery delays in 73 postcodes across the UK, with the disruptions occurring just hours before Mother's Day. The postal service has confirmed a number of issues affecting local offices, which could impact timely deliveries for many customers expecting cards and gifts.

Reasons Behind the Disruptions

Royal Mail has attributed the delays to various local factors, including high levels of sick absence, resourcing problems, and other operational challenges. In a statement, the company explained: "We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors."

To mitigate the impact, Royal Mail is implementing a rotation system for deliveries to minimise delays for individual customers. The company is also providing targeted support to affected offices to restore service standards. "We're sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding," Royal Mail concluded.

Historical Context and Regulatory Changes

This incident follows a recent fine of £21 million imposed by Ofcom in the autumn for Royal Mail's failure to meet annual delivery targets. This marks the third time the 509-year-old postal service has been penalised by the watchdog. Additionally, Ofcom has revised Royal Mail's headline delivery targets as part of changes to the Universal Service Obligation (USO).

Starting next month, Royal Mail will only be required to deliver 90% of first-class mail within one working day, down from 93%, and 95% of second-class mail within three days, reduced from 98.5%. These adjustments may influence future service expectations and performance metrics.
