The incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to expand the £150 Warm Home Discount to approximately six million households, doubling the number of eligible recipients. The one-time discount, applied between November and January, provides crucial savings during the winter months when energy costs are highest.
Expanded Eligibility Criteria
Recent updates to the Warm Home Discount rules mean that all households receiving Universal Credit now qualify for the £150 boost, whereas previously only some of them were eligible. Additionally, some of the poorest pensioners, along with those on other benefits such as Housing Benefit and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), will also receive the discount.
The expansion was implemented by the Labour government following its general election victory in 2024. The decision has delivered critical support to more vulnerable households during the coldest time of the year.
Burnham's Broader Energy Plans
According to reports, Burnham is aiming to slash energy bills for UK households through new policies. The Warm Home Discount extension is part of a wider strategy to address the cost-of-living crisis.
Outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in his final address to the House of Commons, defended his government's record: "Because of our decisions, my decisions, the country is moving in the right direction in a stronger and a fairer Britain. Ending austerity, investing in our public services, the fastest falling NHS waiting lists for 17 years, more rights for workers, more rights for renters, standing with Ukraine, Britain's reputation restored and half a million children being lifted out of poverty."
Impact on Households
The £150 discount is applied automatically by energy companies in most cases, providing a one-time reduction on winter energy bills. The extension means around six million households now qualify, approximately double the previous number. This includes some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the country.
The Warm Home Discount was previously more limited in scope, but the Labour government's changes have broadened access significantly. The move is part of a series of cost-of-living measures aimed at supporting low-income families and pensioners.
