The Department for Energy, Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has issued a reminder to benefits claimants receiving four specific Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) handouts. Under Andy Burnham's government, the Labour Party department states that claimants must contact their energy supplier to ensure their name is on the electricity bill to qualify for a £150 discount this winter.
Eligibility Criteria for the Warm Home Discount
Suppliers will use customer records as of Sunday 23 August 2026 to determine eligibility for the Warm Home Discount, with payments administered under Prime Minister Andy Burnham's premiership. The qualifying means-tested benefits are: Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Pension Credit.
Eligible customers on pre-payment meters who use a key or card to top up must also ensure their household's account is registered in their name. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said: "If you know someone who might benefit, please start spreading the word and encourage them to check they are named on their energy bill."
How the Discount Is Applied
Your electricity supplier will apply the discount directly to your bill; the money is not paid to you. You may be eligible if all of the following apply on 23 August 2026: your energy supplier is part of the scheme, you (or your partner) get certain means-tested benefits, and your name (or your partner’s) is on the electricity bill. This is known as being in the 'core group'.
Worryingly, payouts only happen if your name is on the bill and you are receiving one of these benefits. The scheme can also help suppliers offer better support, such as repayment plans, to those who have energy debt. Someone might not be named on their electricity bill if they have recently moved house, it has been warned.
