Haslingden Town Centre Reopening & 2026 Events Announced
Haslingden Road Reopening & 2026 Events Calendar

Rossendale Borough Council has provided a significant update on the extensive public realm enhancement works underway along Higher Deardengate in Haslingden. The authority has confirmed that pivotal sections of the road are scheduled to reopen to vehicular traffic by the end of January, marking a crucial milestone in the project. Furthermore, the council has unveiled an ambitious, full programme of town centre events planned for 2026, designed to capitalise on the newly improved environment and foster community spirit.

Phased Road Reopening and Project Timeline

The ongoing works are a cornerstone of the council's long-term strategic commitment to forging a safer, more accessible, and significantly more welcoming town centre for Haslingden. This initiative aims to bolster local businesses while simultaneously transforming Haslingden into a more attractive destination for visitors, residents, and potential investors alike.

Progress on-site continues at pace, with the Council confirming that from January 30, the following specific sections of Deardengate will be reopened to all traffic:

  • Deardengate between Pleasant Street and Hindle Street.
  • Deardengate from Bank Street northwards to Bury Road.

This reopening will fully restore convenient access to the Hindle Street car park situated behind the library, a facility that has remained operational for users throughout the duration of the construction works.

Final Stages and Completion

Following this initial reopening, construction efforts will then concentrate solely on the central section of Deardengate, located between Hindle Street and Bank Street. The council has scheduled the final completion of all works for February 20.

To ensure adequate flexibility during these concluding stages, the existing formal road closure notice will remain officially in place with an extended timeframe. This administrative measure will persist even as the aforementioned sections reopen according to the planned schedule, ensuring all necessary work can be finished without hindrance.

Acknowledging Community Patience

Rossendale Borough Council openly recognises that the necessary works have, at times, caused considerable frustration for some local residents and business operators. However, the authority emphasises that these comprehensive improvements are meticulously designed to deliver enduring benefits for the entire community.

These long-term advantages include substantially improved pedestrian movement and safety, enhanced accessibility for all, and the creation of a revitalised town centre environment purpose-built to host vibrant events, bustling markets, and support local trade for many years into the future.

Council leader Alyson Barnes stated: "We know these works have required immense patience, and we’d like to thank everyone in Haslingden for their continued understanding and cooperation while these vital improvements have been carried out. What’s truly important is what this strategic investment will ultimately deliver: a safer, more welcoming town centre that actively supports local businesses and creates the perfect setting for enriched community life and memorable events. With completion now firmly in sight, we’re genuinely excited to see Haslingden confidently move into the next dynamic phase of its ongoing regeneration."

2026 Events Programme to Revitalise the Centre

With the physical works approaching their conclusion, the council has also confirmed an exciting preliminary calendar of events specifically for Haslingden throughout 2026. This programme is strategically designed to draw people back into the heart of the town centre and fully utilise the enhanced public spaces.

The planned events for the year include, but are not limited to:

  1. The popular return of the Haslingden Street Fair.
  2. A revival of the well-loved 'Grubs Up' community food event.
  3. Special Mother’s Day celebrations.
  4. Commemorative events for VE Day.
  5. A dedicated Art Festival showcasing local talent.
  6. Interactive 'Music Makers' sessions.
  7. Regular monthly 'Second Saturday Makers Markets'.

Community Involvement and Engagement

The Council is deeply keen to involve the local community in shaping these events and is actively inviting performers, traders, entertainers, schools, and all community groups to get involved and share their creative ideas.

Residents and business owners are also strongly encouraged to attend the weekly, informal drop-in sessions with the project team. These are held every Friday from 12pm to 1pm at Haslingden Market, providing a direct forum to ask specific questions about the remaining works or to discuss ideas for the upcoming 2026 events calendar.
