Wolverhampton's former Sports Direct to become 52-bed hotel and shops
New hotel and shops for Wolverhampton's former Sports Direct

Wolverhampton city centre is set for a major boost after plans to convert a prominent empty store into a hotel, gym, and new shops were given the green light.

Council Approves "Significant Investment"

City of Wolverhampton Council's planning department has approved the transformation of the former Sports Direct building on Queen Street. The vacant unit, which closed in 2021, will be revitalised into a 52-bedroom hotel with a gym on its upper floors. The ground floor will be subdivided to create five new retail units, aimed at attracting smaller, independent businesses.

Planners praised the scheme, describing it as a "significant investment" that will improve the "vitality and viability" of the city centre. A council report highlighted that the proposal would utilise a large, empty space, create jobs, and deliver much-needed visitor accommodation.

Jobs, Facelift and Economic Boost

The development is expected to create 12 new jobs. Furthermore, the building's exterior is in line for an upgrade, with the application stating the "dated" facade will be replaced with modern enhancements.

In a statement submitted with the application, Opinder Singh Gulati of Easy Group Management Ltd said the project would "support the local economy by attracting tourists and business visitors" and re-use an existing structure sustainably. He added it aligns with the city's regeneration goals.

Reinvigorating Retail Space

The separate approval for the ground-floor retail subdivision aims to bring flexible and more affordable commercial units to Queen Street. Council planners believe creating smaller units will improve their appeal to future occupants, helping to ensure the space is actively used again.

The application stated this move will "reinvigorate a large, vacant retail space," increase footfall, and make a positive contribution to the local urban environment. Sports Direct originally vacated the premises to move to a flagship store within the nearby Mander Centre.
