Bournville Green Stage Plan Submitted for Permanent Arts Hub
Permanent 'Green Stage' Plan for Bournville Submitted

A proposal to construct a permanent performance area on Bournville Green has been formally submitted to planners, promising a significant boost for local arts and cultural activities.

Design and Funding for the New Community Asset

The plan centres on creating a 'green stage' made from resin-bound natural stone gravel, designed to blend with the historic sandstone buildings in the conservation area. The semi-circular performance space will have a radius of around eight metres.

This initiative follows a successful funding bid by a consortium of 13 local partners, who were awarded £63,000 by Birmingham City Council in April 2024. The lead partner is Hub On The Green CIC, working alongside major organisations like Bournville Village Trust, Selly Manor Museum, and St Francis Church.

A Hub for Celebrations and Spontaneous Gatherings

The new staging area is intended to provide a dedicated, fit-for-purpose space for the popular events that already animate the Green. This includes established gatherings such as:

  • Carols on the Green
  • Pride on the Green
  • Chinese New Year celebrations

Beyond formal events, the design aims to foster more informal gatherings and spontaneous activity, strengthening the Green's role as a community heart.

Minimal Impact on a Historic Setting

Conscious of Bournville's unique heritage, the consortium has emphasised a sensitive design. The stage will be situated in an underused, heavily shaded corner of the Green, which is rarely used for gatherings.

A project statement clarified that "minimising any harm to the setting of the Green and the listed buildings" was a key driver. The location also preserves the key open spaces and protects views of the iconic Rest House.

The plan was developed in collaboration with students from the University of Birmingham's Centre for Urban and Regional Studies. The proposals are now awaiting a formal planning decision at a future committee date.
