Stafford's £30m Eastgate Transformation: 100 Homes & Hotel Plan
Stafford's £30m Eastgate Regeneration Unveiled

Ambitious plans for a major transformation of Stafford town centre have been officially unveiled, promising to revitalise the historic Eastgate area with new homes, a hotel, and enhanced public spaces.

A New Vision for Eastgate

The proposals, presented by Staffordshire County Council and ION Developments at a public consultation event on Wednesday, November 26, involve a significant redevelopment. The project will see the demolition of a seven-storey building between Eastgate Street and South Walls, which was previously used as the council's education hub.

Additionally, the scheme includes the redevelopment of land once occupied by the town's former magistrates' court on South Walls. This mixed-use development, known as the Eastgate project, is designed to provide around 100 new homes and a hotel with approximately 100 bedrooms.

Boosting the Local Economy and Community

The new homes will be a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, strategically located to attract young professionals, key workers, and those looking to downsize. According to a council FAQ document, the development aims to lever in around £30m of private investment.

The hotel component is set to feature a restaurant and bar, with projections indicating it will generate up to 20 new jobs during construction and 40 permanent positions once operational. The project also promises an enhanced public area that will improve connectivity between the River Sow, Market Square, and Greengate Street.

Staffordshire County Council's deputy leader, Martin Murray, who examined the proposals after his election in May, expressed strong support. He highlighted the development's modern approach and excellent connectivity, noting the bus stop would be a one-minute walk and the train station just five minutes away.

Integrating with Broader Regeneration

The Eastgate project is designed to complement ongoing regeneration work in Stafford town centre, led by Stafford Borough Council. This includes the demolition of the former Co-op Department Store and Guildhall Shopping Centre to make way for further redevelopment.

Aidan Godfrey, leader of the borough council, welcomed the Eastgate plans, emphasising the importance of bringing town centre living back to Stafford. He stated that as the county town, Stafford needs high-quality developments that will stand the test of time.

The plans are scheduled to be reviewed by Staffordshire County Council's cabinet in the new year, with a planning application expected to be submitted later in 2026. Residents can view further details and participate in a feedback survey via the official consultation website.
