Residents across several Wealden parishes are being invited to have their say on a series of planning proposals that could alter the character of historic local buildings. Wealden District Council has formally published notices for four distinct applications, each affecting either a listed building or a location within a designated conservation area.
Details of the Proposed Works
The council's latest batch of planning notices, published in the Kent & Sussex Courier on January 9, 2026, outlines works ranging from roof replacements to full conversions. Heritage and design considerations are expected to be central to the assessment process, as mandated by the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.
Fletching: Moons Oast Roof Conversion
In Fletching, two linked applications have been submitted for Moons Oast on Sharpsbridge Lane. The proposals, references WD/2025/1669/F and WD/2025/1670/LB, seek permission to replace the central roof and convert the roof space into living accommodation. Further works include installing roof lights, replacing modern sash windows with casement windows, swapping out doors, and removing existing asbestos rainwater goods in favour of metal systems.
Mayfield: Historic High Street Facelift
A listed building within Mayfield's conservation area, known as The Dormer Flat, The Smockery and Woodburning Centre (Tandridge House) on the High Street, is the subject of application WD/2025/2704/LB. The plan involves removing existing uPVC windows and felt-covered flat roofs from first-floor bays on the south elevation, and a uPVC window on the east elevation's second floor. These would be replaced with new timber casement windows and new lead-covered bay roofs, aiming to restore traditional aesthetics.
Rotherfield: Farm Building to Dwelling
At Bullfinches Farm on Forge Road in Eridge, Rotherfield, an application (WD/2025/2739/F) proposes converting an existing lapsed commercial building, currently treated as agricultural, into a single residential dwelling (C3 use). The project includes changing the roof covering to original plain tiles, cladding the walls with timber weatherboarding, and erecting an agricultural-style double garage adjacent to the main structure.
Danehill: Amending Approved Plans
In Danehill's conservation area, an application for Belle Vue on Church Lane (WD/2025/2339/FA) seeks a variation of a previously approved condition. The proposal aims to amend the external materials and fenestration for a new outbuilding, which was granted permission under reference WD/2024/0954/F for demolition of an existing garage and reconstruction in a different location.
How to Have Your Say
The council has opened a formal consultation period, and written representations must be submitted no later than January 30, 2026. All comments should be addressed to the Head of Planning and Environmental Services, quoting the relevant application reference number.
Members of the public can inspect the full application documents in person at the Council Offices on Vicarage Lane in Hailsham between 8.30am and 5pm on weekdays. Alternatively, all details are available online via the council's own planning portal or through the Public Notice Portal.
Those who believe they may be adversely affected by any of the proposals are strongly encouraged to submit a representation before the deadline. The council's final decisions will weigh the proposed works against their impact on the historic and architectural significance of the protected sites and areas.
