A widespread outage has affected Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, causing frustration for millions of users across the globe, including many in Birmingham. The platforms became inaccessible around 4:30 PM GMT on Tuesday, with users reporting error messages and inability to refresh feeds or send messages.
Global Impact of the Outage
The disruption is not limited to the UK; users from the United States, Europe, Asia, and other regions have also reported issues. DownDetector, a website that tracks online outages, recorded a sharp spike in complaints for all three services. The outage appears to be related to a problem with the parent company Meta's infrastructure, though no official statement has been released as of yet.
Birmingham Users Affected
In Birmingham, social media users took to alternative platforms like Twitter and TikTok to express their frustration. Many businesses that rely on Instagram and Facebook for marketing have also been impacted. Local resident Sarah Thompson said, "I run my small business through Instagram, and this outage is costing me sales. I hope it gets fixed soon."
Previous Outages and Recovery
This is not the first time Meta's services have experienced a major outage. In October 2021, a similar incident took Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp offline for several hours. That outage was attributed to a faulty configuration change. It remains to be seen whether this current disruption has a similar cause.
Meta has not yet provided a timeline for restoration, but engineers are reportedly working on the issue. Users are advised to stay patient and check for updates on alternative channels.
