Brinnington is set to benefit from a £20 million government investment, with local residents being asked to help decide how the money is spent. The long-term funding, part of the Pride in Place programme, will be guided by local people to ensure decisions reflect the community's priorities.
New board to lead community engagement
A newly appointed board, made up of 13 local residents, decision-makers, and public service representatives, will meet for the first time next month. The group will champion local priorities and gather community feedback to help build a long-term plan for the area.
Residents can share their views through an online survey, explaining what they love about the area and what needs improving. Feedback will also be collected at special events where an ice cream van offers free treats in exchange for ideas. Additionally, local community groups can apply for grants of between £100 and £500 to run their own engagement activities.
First decision: Lantern parade returns
The board has already made its first decision by backing the return of a popular neighbourhood lantern parade later this year. This move signals the board's commitment to supporting community traditions while planning for the future.
Nikki Thompson, chair of the board, said: "Brinnington is my home and I am incredibly proud to be working alongside residents, community organisations and partners to help shape its future." She added: "This investment is a real opportunity, but it can only succeed if local people are at the heart of every decision. Before the Board starts making plans, we want to listen. We want to hear what people love about Brinnington, the challenges they face and their ideas for the future."
MP and council back community-led approach
Navendu Mishra, MP for Stockport, expressed support for the initiative: "Pride in Place is a great opportunity for Brinnington, and I am proud to support Chair Nikki Thompson and a Board that is passionate about making a difference for local people." He encouraged residents to get involved ahead of the first meeting in September.
Councillor Dan Oliver, cabinet member for communities, culture and public protection at Stockport Council, said: "In Stockport, we want every community to feel heard, valued and able to shape the places they call home. Brinnington has an incredibly strong community, and Pride in Place gives us a real opportunity to work with residents to build on that strength." He stressed that listening to local people must be at the heart of the work, ensuring the investment delivers lasting benefits.
