Starmer Rules Out Bank Holiday for England vs Mexico

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed that there will be no bank holiday on Monday when England face Mexico in the World Cup at 1am. The decision comes after England's 2-1 win over DR Congo on Wednesday night, which sparked renewed calls for an extra public holiday.

Starmer's Stance on the Bank Holiday

Speaking on Monday, Starmer's team stated they would not commit to a bank holiday for England fans should the team win, but added: "We will be flying the flag for knockout matches, and it will go up on Wednesday." The Prime Minister will instead fly the St George's Cross outside Downing Street.

Last year, in a St George's Day address, Starmer said: "We should be proud of that flag. We must never concede it, because it is an expression of our values and our patriotism."

Political Criticism

The Conservative Party chairman, Kevin Hollinrake, criticised Starmer, saying: "Keir Starmer claims to love his country, but won’t fly the England flag for the World Cup. He is just another Labour Party plastic patriot. He should show some backbone and pride in our flag and our history. These are the things that bring us together."

Starmer is widely anticipated to be replaced by Andy Burnham, the new MP for Makerfield, as Labour leader.

England's World Cup Journey

England's victory over DR Congo was secured by two goals from Harry Kane. After the match, the Prince of Wales, patron of the Football Association, posted a tribute on Instagram, writing: "Never in doubt… well done England! Onto the next! W."

Starmer expressed optimism about England's chances, posting on social media site X: "It might actually be coming home." Former England captain David Beckham also praised the team, calling Kane a "true leader" and describing the performance as "absolutely brilliant."

England will face Mexico in Mexico City at 1am on Monday morning.
