Ellie Simmonds OBE: Women Behind Her Success

Paralympic swimming legend Ellie Simmonds OBE has opened up about the influential women who have shaped her remarkable career, from her mother to her coaches. The five-time gold medallist, who hails from the Midlands, credits these strong female figures for her success both in and out of the pool.

A Mother's Support

Simmonds, who was born with achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism, says her mother was her first and biggest advocate. 'My mum never treated me any differently,' she recalls. 'She pushed me to try everything and never let me use my disability as an excuse.'

Coaching Mentors

The 28-year-old also pays tribute to her female coaches, who taught her resilience and technique. 'They saw my potential and believed in me when I didn't believe in myself,' she says.

Simmonds, who won gold at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics at just 13, emphasizes the importance of role models. 'Seeing strong women succeed made me think, "I can do that too."

Now retired from competitive swimming, Simmonds focuses on inspiring the next generation, particularly young girls with disabilities. 'I want them to know that their dreams are valid, and with the right support, they can achieve anything.'
