A record-breaking summer event saw thousands of runners lace up their trainers for a historic dash between two of Warwickshire's most famous landmarks. More than 5,000 participants successfully completed the challenging 10k course from Warwick Castle to Kenilworth Castle on Sunday, June 14.
This impressive turnout marked the biggest number of official finishers in the long history of the annual spectacle. Organised by Kenilworth Runners, the popular event was able to welcome an extra 1,000 participants to the start line this year.
The scenic route was tackled by a total of 5,220 finishers, with thousands more hopefuls left on a waiting list. Paddy Roddy took the top spot in the men's race, followed by Ian Allen in second and Tesfaye Weday in third. The women's race was won by Marijke Tear-Verweij, with Becky Fleet taking second place and Paz Torres finishing third.
The event helps to raise vital funds for various good causes, including The Myton Hospices. A record number of 77 runners took part specifically to raise money for the local hospice charity. The event receives long-term backing from Blythe Liggins Solicitors, who recently committed to sponsoring the run for another five years.
Richard Clarke from Kenilworth Runners said: “It was really rewarding to see everyone enjoying themselves on the day. The weather was perfect, it felt like the first weekend of nice weather we’ve had in June.” “We had a lot of runners say they are already looking forward to signing up for next year, along with volunteers, too. Everyone is very committed to the future of the event.”
“We took a step up in numbers this year and we know there is the appetite for it to grow further. We had more than 5,000 runners, but there were also 3,000 on the waiting list.” “We’ll work with Warwick Castle and Kenilworth Castle to see if we can safely increase the capacity, because the scope and ambition to do it is definitely there.”
Donna Bothamley from Blythe Liggins Solicitors said: “This year’s Two Castles Run was the biggest yet and it was clear to see from the size of the crowds and smiles on everyone’s faces that it was a huge success.” “It’s really heartening to see how support for the event just grows and grows, as it makes such a difference to The Myton Hospices and other great causes locally.” “Congratulations to everyone who took part – whether organising, running or volunteering – for such a fantastic event.”
