Just as it has for the last two years, Marcus Rashford's future is once again a major talking point in this transfer window. The former Aston Villa loanee has spent the season at Barcelona, and throughout the campaign, everything seemed to point toward a permanent deal. However, that scenario no longer appears straightforward, and the 28-year-old has been linked with a return to Villa Park.
Barcelona Situation
Rashford played 49 games in all competitions for Barcelona, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists. He started 18 of his 32 La Liga matches. The Catalan club has until June 15 to trigger a £26 million option in the loan agreement, but reports have emerged claiming that while they want to keep him, they are unwilling to meet the option fee. Nothing is off the table, although a return to Barcelona at this stage seems unlikely.
Manchester United Situation
Rashford has not played for Manchester United since December 2024, after which he was loaned to Aston Villa and then to Barcelona. He has two years left on his Old Trafford contract, and manager Michael Carrick has left the door open for a potential return. In April, Carrick said: 'There are decisions to be made in time on certain things. Marcus is in that situation. At this point in time, nothing has been decided. It will be at a certain point because it has to be, but at this stage nothing has been decided.' As things stand, Rashford will return to United for pre-season after the World Cup.
Who Is Interested
Arsenal have been linked with a move, while Tottenham are reported to be keen on his Premier League experience to help Roberto de Zerbi's young squad. Newcastle have also been credited with an interest, with Rashford seemingly a good fit to replace Anthony Gordon, who has ironically joined Barcelona. Last month, MundoDeportivo via Sport Witness claimed that Aston Villa have made an offer to Rashford, while two days ago, The i Paper suggested Villa were monitoring the situation.
Aston Villa Interest
Rashford performed reasonably well during his loan spell at Villa for the second half of the 2024/25 season, but that was against a backdrop of limited playing time and eroded confidence. He is now fit, fully up to speed, and having regained his England squad place, he is clearly in fine form. Rashford is best suited playing off the left or leading the line through the middle, a versatility that would appeal to Unai Emery.
Rashford's Stance
Last October, the forward admitted he wants to stay at Barcelona, saying: 'I'm enjoying this football club and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game.' In May, when asked if he will stay, he replied: 'I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay. We will see.' Following his call-up to the World Cup squad, he took to social media to thank the head coaches who have been instrumental in his rejuvenation: Hansi Flick and Unai Emery.
The Latest
Sport claims that Manchester United are 'angry' about Barcelona's insistence that they will not pay the full option fee, while other reports say United have rejected a £13 million offer. The same publication adds that Arsenal have enquired about the situation.
