Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro has died at the age of 25 after collapsing during a friendly match in Portugal. Castro was playing for Real Massamá against Estrela da Amadora at the Estadio das Seixas in Malveira when he fell to the ground after just 10 minutes of the game.
Medical teams from both clubs rushed to assist the player, and a defibrillator was reportedly used at the scene. Despite resuscitation attempts, the efforts were unsuccessful, according to reports from Portuguese outlet A Bola.
Emergency response and club statement
The National Institute of Medical Emergency was activated, and healthcare professionals arrived at the scene. Castro was transported to hospital, but medical staff were unable to save him.
Estrela da Amadora released a statement expressing their sorrow. “Estrela da Amadora hereby expresses its deepest sorrow for the passing of Quévin Castro, player for Real Massamá,” the club said.
“At this moment of profound sadness, Estrela da Amadora extends its most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Quévin Castro, as well as to the entire Real Massamá structure. Our thoughts are with all those close to him. Rest in peace, Quévin.”
Castro’s career and clubs
Castro, who was born in Lisbon, joined West Bromwich Albion in 2021 following a successful trial. He made his senior debut for the club in a Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal. During his time at the Hawthorns, he had loan spells with Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead.
After leaving West Brom, Castro played for York City, Chippenham Town, Cambridge City and Eastbourne Borough before returning to Portugal to join Real Massamá in the summer of 2026. He was registered with West Brom between 2021 and 2023.
