Aston Villa's triumphant return to Birmingham after their Europa League final victory over SC Freiburg has sparked city-wide celebrations. The 3-0 win in Istanbul ended a 30-year trophy drought for the club, and a 90-minute open-top bus parade is planned to honor the team.
Parade Details and Route
The parade will start at approximately 4:30 PM on Thursday, May 21, from Branston Street in the Jewellery Quarter. It will pass through Sand Pits and Broad Street before finishing at Centenary Square. The route covers 4.5 kilometers and is expected to take between 60 and 90 minutes. A three-bus convoy will feature the players on a claret-colored bus, culminating in a trophy lift at Centenary Square.
Viewing and Accessibility
Fans are encouraged to spread out along the route, with large screens set up at intervals to ensure good views. A dedicated raised viewing platform for up to 35 wheelchair users and 35 companions is available at Centenary Square on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is free and unticketed, but access to certain areas may be restricted once they reach capacity.
Travel and Road Closures
Roads in and around Birmingham will be significantly busier than usual. Temporary parking suspensions and road closures will be in place from 10 AM to 10 PM on affected streets, including Branston Street, Hall Street, Warstone Lane, Frederick Street, Albion Street, Powell Street, Summer Hill Road, Sand Pits, Clement Street, and St Vincent Street. Fans are strongly advised to use public transport, though bus routes will be diverted, trains will be very busy, and the West Midlands Metro will run a limited service after 10 AM. Park-and-ride facilities are recommended.
Public Transport Disruptions
National Express West Midlands has confirmed numerous bus route diversions. Fans are urged to plan ahead, check before traveling, and allow extra time. Martin Colmey, operations director for Network Rail's Central route, warned that trains and stations in Birmingham will be extra busy throughout the day. He advised fans to know their last trains and not rely on the very last one.
Reactions and Highlights
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia, and Morgan Rogers sealed the victory for Unai Emery's side. Striker Ollie Watkins praised the team's transformation from relegation battlers to European champions, saying, "To bring a trophy back to Birmingham is special." Co-owner Nassef Sawiris declared that "the sky is the limit" for the club. Former player Jack Grealish sent a message: "Congrats to the whole of Aston Villa, absolutely incredible!"
Fan Experiences
Grand Central station roared with celebration as Villa fans gathered. John Townley, Aston Villa reporter, described tears of joy in the press box. The club has arranged for fans unable to attend the parade to watch it live on VillaTV, YouTube, and social media channels. The trophy will also be paraded at Villa Park during the first home game of the 2026/27 season.
Safety and Etiquette
There will be an increased presence of police and stewards to manage crowds. Fans are urged to agree on a meeting point beforehand in case groups or children get separated. Flags and banners are allowed, but supporters must be mindful of local residents, use provided public toilets, and dress for an outdoor event with limited shelter. The club advises against driving due to severe road closures and congestion.
