Aston Villa Player Ratings: 9s and 8s After Liverpool Win

Aston Villa secured Champions League qualification with a 4-2 victory over Liverpool in their final home match of the season at Villa Park.

Match Summary

Morgan Rogers opened the scoring late in the first half, before Virgil van Dijk headed Liverpool back on level terms shortly after the interval. Villa were not behind for long as Ollie Watkins bagged his 18th and 19th goals of the season across all competitions. John McGinn then bent a stunning finish into the top corner in the 89th minute to make sure of the victory, before Van Dijk scored a consolation goal in added time.

It marked Villa’s first win over Liverpool under Unai Emery, who had previously gone 10 Premier League matches without beating them. The result confirms a top-five finish ahead of their Europa League final against Freiburg on Wednesday night.

First Half Action

Villa started brightly, with Ollie Watkins testing the goal twice in the opening eight minutes. His first effort was too tame, while the second flew high and wide. After picking up a knock to his hip following his second attempt, Watkins was able to continue and remained a threat. In the 11th minute, Mamardashvili raced off his line to deny him from reaching a through ball. With the Liverpool goalkeeper looking uncertain, Rogers collected the loose ball and crossed towards Watkins, who would likely have connected if not for a timely intervention from Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool grew into the game after the opening 15 minutes and created their first real chance when Van Dijk headed the ball back across goal. However, Ezri Konsa reacted well to prevent Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo from capitalising inside the six-yard box. Emi Martinez had a shaky moment in the 27th minute, parrying Ryan Gravenberch’s shot into the path of Gakpo, who finished from close range. The goal, however, was ruled out for offside. In a half lacking intensity from both sides, Villa took the lead four minutes before the break. John McGinn and Lucas Digne combined neatly before Rogers found space and curled a fine effort past Mamardashvili.

Second Half Drama

Liverpool responded after the restart, with Van Dijk heading in Dominik Szoboszlai’s wide free-kick. Villa then thought they had doubled their lead when Watkins was played through by McGinn, only for the flag to go up for offside. At the other end, Rio Ngumoha struck the base of the post after cutting inside onto his stronger right foot, but Villa then made their advantage count. Szoboszlai slipped in possession, allowing Rogers to take control and feed Watkins, who finished calmly past Mamardashvili in front of a bouncing Holte End.

Watkins nearly added a second later when played through by Emi Buendia, but Mamardashvili produced a good save to deny his chipped effort. In the 65th minute, Watkins was presented with another opportunity, as he was picked out by Rogers down the side of the box, but Villa’s number 11 could not quite squeeze the ball past the goalkeeper. Buendia then rattled both the bar and post with an outstanding effort from the corner of the box, whipping the ball over a helpless Mamardashvili, who was saved by the woodwork. It would have been another stunner to add to Buendia's impressive catalogue this season.

Villa’s third came when Youri Tielemans fired in a volley from outside the box, giving Pau Torres a chance from just yards out. Mamardashvili made the save, but Watkins converted the rebound. There was still enough time for McGinn to add a goal of the season contender when he cut inside from the right and bent the ball over Mamardashvili and into the top corner, before Van Dijk reduced Liverpool's deficit in stoppage time.

Player Ratings

Starting XI

Emi Martinez (7): Martinez parried Ryan Gravenberch’s effort from the edge of the box, which fell to Cody Gakpo to score, but the forward was flagged offside. Villa’s number one also stretched to push Dominik Szoboszlai’s effort wide of the post. Excellent distribution this evening.

Matty Cash (7): Cash started his 17th home league game of the season and had the challenge of dealing with the tricky Rio Ngumoha. Produced quality from set-pieces.

Ezri Konsa (8): Konsa made a crucial intervention when he denied Curtis Jones and then Gakpo following Virgil van Dijk’s header across goal. Took no nonsense from Alexis Mac Allister in the penalty box from the corner that led to Villa’s third.

Pau Torres (8): Torres continued his fine recent form at the heart of Villa’s defence, playing out from the back and providing a reliable presence alongside Konsa.

Lucas Digne (8): Digne was central to the innovative set-piece routine that unlocked Liverpool before half-time.

Victor Lindelof (6): Lindelof continued in the double pivot, operating in an anchor role alongside Youri Tielemans. He was taken off at the break for Ross Barkley. The Swede completed 16 of his 17 passes, three of which were played into the final third.

Youri Tielemans (7): Tielemans got stuck in and helped Villa tick in possession, as he so often does. His drive on goal was followed in by Torres and then Ollie Watkins for Villa’s third.

John McGinn (8): McGinn got in on the act with a stunning finish late on in the second half. Unai gave him a warm embrace when he was then taken off minutes later. He is in the perfect condition for Wednesday's final.

Emi Buendia (7): Buendia returned to the starting XI after Barkley was preferred against Burnley. He slipped a couple of neat passes into the channel for Watkins to run onto and cause problems. So unlucky not to score a beauty of his own in the second half.

Morgan Rogers (8): Rogers bagged his 10th league goal of the season to break the deadlock late in the first half, bending the ball past Giorgi Mamardashvili. He then capitalised on Szoboszlai’s slip to set up Watkins for Villa’s second.

Ollie Watkins (9): Watkins scored his 18th and 19th goals of the season. Liverpool simply could not live with him. He had two early efforts - one tame, the other off target - but was a constant threat throughout. Outstanding forward play.
