Gareth Barry and Tim Sherwood Back Morgan Rogers to Start for England Against Panama
Barry and Sherwood Urge Rogers Start for England vs Panama

Former Aston Villa men Gareth Barry and Tim Sherwood have both voiced their support for Morgan Rogers to start for England in their World Cup match against Panama on Saturday night. The 23-year-old attacker came off the bench against Ghana on Tuesday and injected life into the England attack, though Thomas Tuchel's side still failed to break down their opponents in Boston. The draw secured England's place in the knockout stages, but a win against Panama is needed to guarantee top spot in the group.

Rogers Could Replace Bellingham

Following the frustrating performance against Ghana, many are calling for changes to the starting XI, with Rogers potentially replacing Jude Bellingham as an option for Tuchel. Barry, a former England international, highlighted Rogers' consistency this season. "Morgan Rogers has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier League this year, he's played the most minutes for Villa and despite a slight dip in his form, he has finished the season really strongly," Barry told Action Network. "On the world stage, he is relatively unknown, which gives him the potential to be a breakout star like we often see at World Cups and Euros, Wayne Rooney was one of them."

Careful Management Needed

Barry emphasized the need for careful management due to Rogers' workload this season. "He will need careful management due to his workload this season, but if he can maintain his form and confidence, he can surprise other nations whose managers maybe aren't as aware of him. If he can repeat his weekly performances, it will be excellent news for England."

Sherwood Praises Rogers' Bravery

Sherwood, a former Aston Villa manager, agreed with Barry, telling BOYLE Sports: "He's brave. He looks to take possession wherever you ask him to. He can drift out to the left-hand side. I think that's where he's more effective when he's drifting off the left coming central. But his numbers are still good." Sherwood also noted Rogers' ability to bounce back from a dip in form, similar to teammate Ollie Watkins. "He had a little dip, same with Ollie Watkins. As a manager, you look at that, and you go, you know what? They had a dip, but they've come back. Sometimes it's easy when you're scoring all the time, but when you have a little bit of a rough time, how strong are you to roll your sleeves up and come back through it? And I think both of these players have done it for Villa and they're a huge club. They're used to playing on the big occasion."

England's Group Stage Situation

England currently sit second in their World Cup group after a draw against Ghana and a win in their opening match. A victory against Panama would secure top spot and potentially a more favorable knockout stage draw. Rogers, who has been a key player for Aston Villa this season, could provide the creative spark needed to break down a stubborn Panama defense.
