Former Aston Villa and West Brom star Gareth Barry believes Birmingham City face a significant decision regarding the future of manager Chris Davies. The ex-England international, who knows the region well, highlighted the expectations of Blues fans who have endured years without major success.
With the troubled eras of Carson Yeung and Trillion Trophy Asia now firmly in the past, the club is poised for a potentially massive future under new owners Knighthead. Plans for a state-of-the-art stadium and wealthy backers have sparked excitement among supporters.
Speaking about the upcoming season, Barry said: "Living in the area, I know the Birmingham fans are excited. They seem pretty patient, to be fair. There were slight expectations that they could get to the playoffs, but I think they're probably happy with the direction the club's going.
"They've all seen the plans from the new owners. If you're doing well on the pitch, it helps everything else. You can gain rewards financially as well.
"They're going to have a big decision with the manager there, Chris Davies. It was his first year in the Championship, so you can't expect too much despite dominating League One.
"There's certainly going to be a tiny bit more pressure next year. I think they will be expecting to push a lot closer to the playoffs at least."
Pressure Mounts for Playoff Push
Barry's comments come as Birmingham City look to build on their promotion from League One. The club's hierarchy must weigh Davies' performance in his debut Championship season against the growing expectations fueled by ambitious off-field projects.
The former England midfielder emphasized that on-pitch success is crucial to complement the club's long-term vision. With a new stadium on the horizon and significant investment, the pressure will intensify for Birmingham to deliver a serious playoff challenge next term.
