Jude Bellingham has clarified the nature of his on-field conversation with Lionel Messi during England's World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina, dismissing viral speculation as a simple disagreement over a foul.
Bellingham sets record straight on Messi exchange
The Birmingham City academy graduate spoke after the match about the widely shared moment, which sparked numerous memes and viral videos online. Bellingham explained that the discussion was merely a back-and-forth about a refereeing decision.
“We were discussing a foul actually,” Bellingham said. “It was nothing bad. I'm sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal [out of it]. But it was nothing big really.”
The England midfielder elaborated on the exchange: “I thought there was a foul earlier and he said: 'What about the one on me?' I said: 'You're strong enough to take it.' You know what I mean?”
England's heartbreaking defeat
England led the defending champions in Atlanta through an Anthony Gordon strike, but Argentina mounted a dramatic comeback. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi set up Enzo Fernandez for the equaliser before providing a decisive assist for Lautaro Martinez in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 victory. Argentina will face Spain in Sunday's final as they aim to retain their title.
Despite the disappointment, Bellingham expressed respect for the Argentine legend. “It was a privilege to play against him, it was nothing like that against him. I'm obviously on the losing side which hurts a lot. But a privilege to line up against one of the best,” he added.
