Birmingham City manager Chris Davies faces a significant selection headache as his squad prepares for Saturday evening's Championship fixture against Swansea City. The Blues could be without as many as seven first-team players due to a combination of injuries and international duty.
AFCON Semi-Final Holds Key for Osayi-Samuel
The club will be closely monitoring the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco. Defender Bright Osayi-Samuel, who has featured for Nigeria during their run to the last four, will definitely miss the Swansea match if his nation reaches Sunday's final. In that scenario, he is also unlikely to be available for the subsequent trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday.
Should Nigeria be eliminated by Morocco, Osayi-Samuel could make a swift return to the Midlands. His absence adds to a growing list of unavailable players for Davies.
Injury List Piles Pressure on Blues Squad
The injury situation worsened during last Saturday's FA Cup victory over Cambridge United. Defender Jack Robinson asked to be substituted in the second half after feeling a tightness in his hamstring. The club confirmed the change was precautionary, and they hope there is no serious damage. Davies is expected to provide a further update in his pre-Swansea press conference.
Striker Jay Stansfield, the team's top scorer with nine goals across all competitions, is struggling with a leg knock sustained around Christmas. He missed the Cambridge game and his fitness is being assessed daily. "It won't be a long-term thing," Davies said, expressing hope the 23-year-old could be available after a good week of recovery.
Left-back Alex Cochrane is facing an extended period on the sidelines with an ankle issue. Having missed six of the last eight matches, he is not close to a return and is described by Davies as the player the team will "miss for longer."
Long-Term Absences Continue
The treatment room remains busy with several other key figures. Winger Demarai Gray, who suffered a calf injury in the Boxing Day draw with Derby County, is not expected back until February. While Davies noted Gray is a "quick healer," the original prognosis was around six weeks.
Ethan Laird has been absent since late September with a serious hamstring injury. The manager indicated a return to team training is pencilled in for February. Meanwhile, Lee Buchanan continues his long-term recovery from a knee injury, now twelve months in, and has only recently begun light training. The January signing of Kai Wagner provides cover in his position.
This confluence of absences presents a major challenge for Birmingham as they look to secure vital Championship points against Swansea City at St Andrew's on Saturday (5:30pm kick-off).
